Dental Bridges in Owings Mills, MD

Dental Bridges: An Overview

Is your smile complete? It may be spoiled by one or more missing teeth. A properly fitting dental bridge can be used as a replacement. It effectively “bridges” the gap left by a missing tooth. Dr. Jonathan Silverman, of Owings Mills, MD, can fit you with a dental bridge to restore your smile after you lose one or more teeth.

Dental bridges are usually made of metal, porcelain, or ceramic. Since it’s made with a color matched to your natural teeth, no one will know it’s an artificial tooth. Your ability to chew and speak can also be improved. So go ahead and smile!

Dental Bridges in Use Today

Dentists today use one of four types of dental bridges:

  • The most common, a traditional fixed bridge, is made of two or more crowns and connected filler teeth. The bridge is cemented in place.
  • An implant-supported bridge is like the traditional bridge but uses dental implants rather than cement to hold the bridge in place.
  • A cantilever bridge is connected to one tooth and may be used if you have a tooth on one side of the gap but not the other.
  • A resin-bonded bridge is frequently used for missing front teeth.

Dental Bridges:  What to Expect

The dental bridge process begins with the creation of a treatment plan tailored to your mouth. You and Dr. Silverman will discuss anchoring your dental bridge with existing teeth or dental implants. If your existing teeth are healthy enough, they can be used as anchors. Dr. Silverman may recommend using a dental crown to strengthen your teeth. Dental impressions will be taken and you may be fitted with a temporary dental bridge.

Your permanent bridge will be placed in your mouth during another appointment. If a temporary bridge was used, it will be removed first. Once Dr. Silverman places the new bridge, he may adjust it for a comfortable and proper fit. Your new bridge will give you back a healthy smile and can improve your quality of life.
