Meet Dr. Jonathan E. Silverman and His Philosophy

Dr. Jonathan E. Silverman welcomes new patients to the Maryland Center for Complete Dentistry in Owings Mills, MD. He notes that his approach to dentistry and his practice differ from the norm. As the dentist featured in the magazine, he explains that his goal is to conserve and maintain each patient’s natural teeth.

Dr. Silverman’s Three Maxims

  1. “The best dentistry is no dentistry.” He believes the teeth nature gave you are ideal and that less dental work and fewer materials are better. This philosophy does not mean avoiding the dentist; instead, it focuses on using only procedures and materials that are optimal for oral health.
  2. Natural structures are better than man‑made materials. For example, he rarely places full crowns. Instead, he prefers partial crowns (onlays) because they leave most of the tooth intact and avoid putting synthetic materials next to the gums.
  3. More natural tooth structure is better than more man‑made material. He emphasizes that preserving tooth structure leads to fewer long‑term oral issues and enhanced wellbeing.

Education and Awards

Dr. Silverman earned his DDS degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1984 and then pursued advanced dental education. He studied cosmetic dentistry as it was being developed and began using Invisalign in 2004. In 2003 he was awarded Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry after completing more than 500 hours of continuing education and passing a comprehensive examination. He continued his education and, in 2008, earned Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry—a distinction that requires at least 1,100 hours of continuing education across all disciplines of general dentistry. Only about five percent of dentists nationwide have achieved this honor.

In addition to the Academy of General Dentistry accolades, Dr. Silverman is a Fellow of the International College of Oral Implantologists. He has focused much of his recent continuing education on dental implants because he believes implants represent a quantum leap in the treatment of missing teeth.

What He Can Do for You

Dr. Silverman has had particular success treating patients who have had significant prior dental work and are unhappy with the results. He is also adept at working with high‑fear cases and uses his sense of humor to make patients feel at ease. If you have experienced failures in dental work or need advanced care, he invites you to see what modern dental technology combined with a gentle chairside manner can do.
