Onlays: The Healthier Alternative to Crowns & Invisalign Clear Aligners

Onlays vs. Crowns

At the Maryland Center for Complete Dentistry, Dr. Silverman prefers onlays over full crowns. An onlay covers the top of a tooth and one or more cusps, whereas a crown covers the entire tooth down to the gumline. Because onlays preserve more natural tooth structure, they are healthier for gums and maintain more of the original tooth. Onlays keep synthetic dental materials away from the gumline, which helps keep gums happier and healthier.

Crowns require a tooth to be ground down to a nub and can add new problems when synthetic materials contact the gums. Onlays are used for deeply decayed teeth, teeth that have undergone root‑canal therapy and teeth requiring repeated replacement of the same fillings. They preserve more natural tooth, avoid inflammation and represent a milder form of treatment.

Invisalign Clear Aligners

Misaligned teeth can crack or break other teeth, make chewing difficult and are hard to keep clean. Invisalign gently straightens teeth using clear aligners for a healthy smile. Dr. Silverman notes that adult patients enjoy straightening their teeth without brackets and wires; most people do not even notice the aligners, yet the results are very visible.

The Invisalign process begins with an examination to ensure teeth are healthy. Dr. Silverman digitally scans the mouth and uploads the images into the Invisalign design system. A series of numbered acrylic aligners are produced; the patient switches them in sequence every couple of weeks, gradually moving the teeth into place. Aligners can be removed while eating, allowing unrestricted food choices and easier cleaning. Invisalign is available for teens and adults.
