The enamel of the tooth is one of the hardest parts of the body. The enamel helps protect the teeth from changes in temperature, sugary foods and beverages, and certain kinds of acids. When the enamel is compromised, it leaves your teeth more prone to developing cavities, tooth sensitivity, toothaches, discoloration, and fractures. In some extreme cases, tooth enamel erosion can even lead to tooth loss. It is important to take proper care of your enamel because once the enamel is damaged, it can not regenerate. Only an experienced dentist will be able to offer service to help improve the aesthetic and health of your smile once it has been damaged.

General dentist Dr. Jonathan Silverman of The Maryland Center for Complete Dentistry is committed to providing patients with comprehensive, personalized dental care. Protecting Your Enamel

  • Limit the amount of acidic foods and beverages you consume. Consuming large amounts of acidic food and drinks can begin to affect your enamel over time. Acidic foods and beverages can weaken the enamel, leaving it susceptible to cavities, tooth sensitivity, and discoloration. If you consume acidic foods and beverages, make sure you are properly cleaning your teeth after consumption.
  • Drink more water and avoid sugary foods and beverages.  Drinking the appropriate amount of water can help remove debris that can stick on and between the teeth. Drinking water can also improve saliva productivity. Consuming sugary foods and beverages can result in the development of cavities if they aren’t properly removed from the teeth. Try to limit the amount you consume to help keep your enamel from breaking down over time.
  • Use ADA approved fluoride mouthwash and tooth paste. Fluoride can help protect the enamel if used correctly. Talk to Dr. Silverman to determine which kind of product is right for you.
