What Are All-on-X Implants?

With traditional dental implants, you need one implant post for every tooth you replace. The implant serves as the new root for your replacement tooth, where it can stimulate your bone and keep your jaw strong just as your natural teeth do. Once the implant is healed, your dentist will generally attach a crown—your replacement tooth—to the top of the metal post.

This is a fantastic solution if you are only missing one or two teeth, but it would be impractical to replace
all of your teeth in this way. For patients who are missing most or all of their natural teeth, the problem is how can you replace them in a way that’s:

  • Stable
  • Cost-effective
  • Functional
  • Natural-looking

All-on-X dental implants are the answer to this problem. With this treatment, we can hold a full arch of replacement teeth in your upper or lower jaw on as few as four implant posts. The best part is, Dr. Silverman can complete the entire dental implant procedure in one appointment. That means you can have your new teeth in just one day.

All-on-X treatment is:

  • Safe
  • Secure
  • Natural-looking
  • Cost-effective
  • Permanent

At The Maryland Center for Complete Dentistry, our experienced dentist Dr. Silverman can handle every aspect of your All-on-X treatment right here in our Owings Mills, MD, office.

How Does the All-on-X Implant Procedure Work?

All-on-X treatment is similar to traditional implant surgery. Dr. Silverman will place a small metal post deep within your gums. This implant will do the job that your teeth’s roots do: it will stimulate your jawbone when you chew. This is important for maintaining a strong jawbone and preventing bone loss.

However, with All-on-X dental implants, Dr. Silverman will place between four and eight implants in strategic spots in your upper or lower jaw. The placement of the implants is optimized to secure your replacement teeth to your jawbone and allow the proper stimulation to keep it healthy and strong. If you have any natural teeth that need to be extracted prior to the implant surgery, Dr. Silverman will extract these first.

Finally, with traditional dental implants, you need to wait for the surgical site to heal completely before your dentist can attach the permanent crown. But with All-on-X dental implants, Dr. Silverman can attach your full arch of replacement teeth right away. You will leave your appointment with a fully-functioning arch of teeth and a beautiful new smile.

How Long Will the Implants Last?

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. On average, dental implants will last for 25 years with proper care such as good oral hygiene and routine dental checkups.

To achieve this longevity, dental implants are made using strong material such as titanium or zirconia. This material will not rust or degrade over time. It is also a good match to your body because it enables
osseointegration, or the growth of bone around the implant. This keeps the dental implants secure in your jaw and strengthens the bone, which means your tooth replacement will be permanent.

Unlike dentures, which need to be replaced about every ten years, with proper care and regular dental checkups, dental implants are a truly permanent solution to missing teeth that will restore the function and beauty of your smile.

How Long is the Recovery Time on the All-on-X Procedure?

The All-on-X dental implant procedure is relatively fast and simple, but it is still a surgical procedure that requires time to heal properly.

Like with regular dental implants, it will take about four to six months for your gums and bone to completely heal from this procedure. Fortunately, your new teeth will be completely functional even while your jaw is healing. And as they heal, your jawbone will start to grow around the dental implants, which will keep your new teeth secure.

Who Is a Candidate for All-on-X Dental Implants?

In general, if you are missing most or all of your natural teeth, you are a candidate for this procedure. However, Dr. Silverman will want to examine your jaw to ensure you are healthy enough for a successful implant surgery. This examination may reveal certain conditions that need to be handled with other treatments before you receive dental implants, such as:

  • Bone grafting to restore lost bone mass in your jaw and strengthen the bone.

The roots of your natural teeth are important because they stimulate your jawbone when you chew. This stimulation keeps the jawbone healthy and strong. When you’re missing a tooth, there is no stimulation. Over time, you can lose bone mass, and your jawbone will become smaller and weaker.

Bone grafting surgery is done to replace the missing bone mass in your jaw. Dr. Silverman will add a special material to the deficient areas in your jaw. As the surgery heals, your natural bone will grow over this special material and strengthen your jawbone. This will ensure your jaw can safely hold the dental implants when you get your All-on-X surgery.

Dr. Silverman will determine if you need bone grafts by using x-rays and other diagnostic tools at your consultation. He will answer any questions you may have about the bone graft procedure and ensure you get your bone graft surgery scheduled.

  • Tooth extraction to remove any remaining teeth so your All-on-X prosthetic will fit properly in your mouth.

Because the All-on-X dental implant procedure is meant to replace your entire arch of teeth (top or bottom), Dr. Silverman will need to remove any extra natural teeth before he can place your implants. This can be done on the same day as your All-on-X implant surgery.

Dr. Silverman will take thorough diagnostics of your mouth at your consultation to ensure your jaw and gums are healthy enough to receive dental implants.

Benefits of All-on-X Dental Implants versus Dentures

When you’re missing teeth, both of these options are good solutions. However, there are clear benefits from getting dental implants that are not offered by dentures.

All-on-X Implants

  • Between four and eight implants
  • Permanent solution
  • Secure replacement teeth
  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • No risk of falling out
  • Stimulates the jawbone to preserve bone mass

Traditional Dentures

  • Removable arch of teeth
  • Temporary solution
  • Can be secured with adhesives, but still could fall out
  • Can look like natural teeth
  • No bone stimulation, risk of losing bone mass

Dr. Silverman often recommends All-on-X dental implants to his patients in the Baltimore area because they are a more secure, permanent solution to missing teeth. Not only are dental implants good for your jawbone health, but they also last longer than dentures.

If you are looking for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth, call our office to schedule your consultation for dental implants with the All-on-X procedure.

Is There a Difference Between

All-on-X and All-on-4 Dental Implants?

All-on-4 and All-on-X dental implants are very similar procedures. Both involve attaching a prosthetic arch of replacement teeth using strategically placed implant posts, and both are permanent solutions to missing teeth. The main difference between them is the number of dental implants used and how they are placed.

  • All-on-4 implants, as the name suggests, tend to use four implants to secure the prosthesis.

  • All-on-X tends to use six implants to secure the prosthesis for added stability, though it can also be done with just four implants.

  • In both procedures, the number of implants used will depend on the size and strength of your jawbone.

Dr. Silverman offers All-on-X treatment to his patients in Owings Mills, MD, and the surrounding areas.
